Annotations & Improvisations
Miles McEnery Gallery
New York, NY

December 9, 2021 - January 29, 2022

Annotations & Improvisations showcases mid-career and established artists who use abstraction to present expansive histories across cultures, traditions, and disciplines. Their works engage with color, texture, and form while exploring authorship and origin. Artists like Biggers, Cole, and Quevedo repurpose textiles, sewing patterns, and ephemera tied to personal and cultural histories, while others, such as Hammond and Hassinger, manipulate traditional materials to evoke bodily and psychological associations. Locke and Sánchez examine architectural politics, and Gatson and Maiolino gesture toward the cosmos. Rather than fix objects to singular origins, the exhibition embraces contradictions, encouraging deeper engagement with unfolding narratives.
